Goals

Our goals for the GTN are to contribute to the improved understanding of blazars and other active galaxies which are sources of cosmic gamma rays. A major aspect of this research involves supporting the GLAST mission by obtaining lead-up and follow-up observations of the blazars which will be observed by GLAST. The GTN will provide ground-based optical coverage for these objects before, during, and after the mission. The GTN will coordinate obtaining CCD images of blazar fields and obtaining magnitude measurements for GTN program objects.

We will also provide opportunities for direct involvement in scientific research and opportunities for mentoring by active researchers and educators. The GTN will provide opportunities to actually do science, and opportunities to show others how science is actually done.

How it Works

Interested individuals, groups, and organizations are invited to become part of the GTN.

Groups could be classes, or clubs, or research groups. Organizations could be focused on research or educational outreach. Individuals could be... individuals interested in astronomy, or individuals interested in becoming involved with an active research program.

There are two possible categories of contributions: participants and partners.

Associates are individuals, groups, or classrooms who dedicate some portion of their time to analyzing data taken with other people's telescopes. You can adopt your own program objects from our list, or request data for other objects by submitting a short proposal. Follow this link for more information about participating as an associate.

Partners are individuals or groups who dedicate some portion of their time and expertise on observatory hardware they already own to regularly observe astronomical targets that are part of the GTN program. Partners may occasionally be able or willing to offer telescope time to GTN participants. Of course, partners may also be involved with analyzing GTN data. Follow this link for more information about partnering.
